Face Gems Safety and Care
Are Face Gems Safe for Your Skin?
For the majority of people, face gems are safe to wear for several hours, especially when they use cosmetic-grade adhesive. It also matters exactly how the gems are applied and removed correctly. The main risks are skin irritation, allergic contact dermatitis, or discomfort if they're used on damaged skin, worn for too long, or applied too close to the eyes.
What Are Face Gem Adhesives Made From?
Our face gems are supplied with a pressure-sensitive cosmetic adhesive already attached to the backing sheet. The exact formulation is below:
- Polystyrene-block-polyisoprene-block-polystyrene - 30%
- Resin acids, esters with gylcerol - 20%
- Petroleum resins - 20%
- POLY(1-BUTENE) - 29.5%
- Pentaerythritol tetrakys 3-(3,5-ditert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) propionate - 0.5%

Should You Patch Test Face Gems?
Yes. There is always a small possibility of skin irritation or an allergic reaction.
A simple patch test can reduce that risk:
- Apply one adhesive gem or a small amount of cosmetic adhesive behind your ear or on the inside of your forearm.
- Leave it in place for 24 hours, unless irritation develops sooner.
- Remove it and check the area over the following day for redness, itching, swelling or blistering.
- If irritation occurs, do not use the product on your face.

Patch testing is particularly important if you've previously reacted to adhesives, plasters, cosmetic products or acrylic-based materials.
Who Should Avoid Wearing Adhesive Face Gems?
Although face gems are suitable for many people, some users should avoid applying them or seek medical advice first.
- People with active eczema
- Broken or damaged skin
Do not apply face gems over:
- Cuts
- Grazes
- Fresh scars
- Sunburn
- Healing acne lesions
- Skin infections
- Around the eyes
Avoid placing gems:
- On the eyelids
- Along the waterline
- Inside the lash line
- Where they could enter the eye
If a gem accidentally enters the eye, remove it carefully and seek medical attention if irritation persists.
How Long Is It Safe to Wear Face Gems?
For most people, wearing adhesive face gems continuously for 8–12 hours is considered reasonable for a single event or occasion. If the skin remains comfortable and there are no signs of irritation then you are OK to continue.
It's a good idea to:
- Remove face gems before going to bed.
- Remove them sooner if they begin lifting or become uncomfortable.
- Give your skin time to recover before applying another adhesive product to the same area.

Keeping adhesive on unnecessarily for extended periods may increase the likelihood of skin irritation, especially in warm weather or after prolonged sweating.
How to Remove Face Gems Safely
Removing face gems gently is just as important as applying them correctly.
- Peel each gem away slowly from one edge.
- Avoid pulling quickly or stretching the skin.
- Remove any remaining adhesive using micellar water or an oil-based makeup remover.
- Wash your face with a gentle cleanser.
- Apply a moisturiser if your skin feels dry after removal.
We have a video guide describing the process of removing face gems which is useful.
If redness lasts longer than a day, or if swelling, blistering or significant discomfort develops, discontinue use and seek advice from a healthcare professional.
